The Making of a Wedding Dress, Part 1

Some good friends of mine are getting married this August. As a wedding gift, I’ll be custom-making the bride’s wedding dress, based on this inspiration photo. We went fabric shopping last Saturday and bought six metres of the most gorgeous cream silk charmeuse and all the other bits and pieces I need to make this dress—all for about $160! Who would have thought you can make a 100% silk wedding dress for under $200? I will also be adding some beautiful French Alençon lace left over from when I made my wedding dress over two years ago.

Good luck! I made both my daughters’ wedding dresses, and the second one had an inset train of embroidered red chinese silk. It turned out beautifully, and the really great thing is that no one else will have exactly the same dress. It is quite amazing how affordable it is to make a wedding dress yourself. The first one I made was a blatant copy of a $3,200.00 designer gown, and I did it for $250.00, from dupioni silk. Best of luck with your project.

Thanks! I can’t wait to get started on it. I’ll be posting my progress as I go, so please check back often.
