Knit Night with the 20-Somethings

There aren’t (as far as I know) any knitting groups out where I live, so when Ilana invited me out to join the Toronto’s 20-Somethings group (oh crap, I’m pushing thirty…does that mean I can’t go any more in a couple years? Nooooooo!) at The Butler’s Pantry last night, I jumped at the chance. It’s nice to get out of the ‘burbs once in a while, and I always love the opportunity to meet other crafters. It’s amazing when you meet a complete stranger and immediately hit it off and have lots to chat about as though you’ve known each other for years, as soon as you find out that you both love to knit/crochet/sew/craft. Although a good number of us were new or fairly new to the group, there was never a quiet moment. Loved it!

One of the things I love most about knit nights is the fact that you’re surrounded by wonderful people who are there to help if you get stuck on something.

Ilana helped Alia, a group member, sew the handles to a bag she recently finished, and did a really fantastic job of hiding all the stitches (not bad, after downing a beer!).

After finishing the bag handles, Ilana moved on to embroidering these fantastic snowflake-to-skully armwarmers (Snowball’s Chance, from The AntiCraft), using the yarn she had leftover from making an Octie.

Emily, another group member, brought along a bag of yarn to give away (good idea, I need to do a little de-stashing myself…wait, that sounds kind of wrong…), and although most of us are way past stashing beyond life expectancy, we all grabbed a few balls (wait, that sounds kind of wrong…). I snagged a really lovely single-spun wooly yarn that looks like it might be Malabrigo (and really wants to be made into a pair of cute wrist warmers), a super-soft ball of variegated green bamboo yarn (don’t know yet what it wants to be when it “grows up”, but for now I just like rubbing it on my face. I’m weird that way, deal with it), and a wonderfully colourful ball of braided cotton that blends from shades of green into blue, that I just love looking at and had to take home with me even though I don’t often knit with cotton. Nothing wrong with using yarn as an objet d’art in it’s own right, right? RIGHT!

It’s often not long, when you get a bunch of knitters together in the same room, before people start putting stuff on their heads (in this case, a few balls of yarn from the aforementioned bag of hand-me-down yarns). Good thing I had the camera with me, bwa ha ha! So without further ado, here’s more goofy pictures of knitters with stuff on their heads:

Well, it was an absolutely wonderful evening and I’ll definitely make the trek out of the burbs to come to more knit nights (but sadly, it’s a bit too far to go every week). Hope to see you guys again soon!

Hahaha, and now there’s a record of the debauchery that occurs on Thursday nights! It was nice to have you . . . hope you come out again soon!!

Aww such cute pictures! Nice to meet you. Hopefully you can join us again soon!

Mainly, I just love that I ended up here with things on my head. Because that is totally how I would end up on someone’s blog. It was great meeting you last night! You should join us again!

usually have to bully myself into driving into TO, but knitting + Butler’s Pantry + you guys = awesome, so I’ll definitely be coming back for another knit night soon!

What a great post, with so many knitters balancing yarn and other knittings at various levels of completion on their heads! It looks like it was a fabulous evening with more than a little social lubricant involved (lemon water and bamboo needles, of course). No crafters of the male persuasion? If you moved your group to Church street, I’m sure you’d get more crocheters. I joke, I chide.
Knit-night-5 has a distinct Michelangelo flair. Anyone agree?

Funny you should mention Church Street–after going back to her place Ilana and I jokingly discussed having the next knit night at one of the bars on Church Street to even out our numbers
You’re so right about knit-night-5 (I do need to get in the habit of adding more useful titles to my images…), that hand is definitely very Michelanangeloan!

Look ma! I’m famous on the internet.
But seriously, the pictures turned out great! Love that you used the yarn-on-heads theme
It was definitely a great night. Hope to see you again soon!
